@Orby I finally figured this out.

Go into project -> android build options -> Details on build android APK

Click create templates, now you can edit that AndroidManifest.xml and set the option to true.

Hmmm interesting question. I do think the resource files lead to a cleaner thing being released, but in an application I did where the QML files are just sitting in the app bundle (OSX) the collaborators have gotten used to trying out their ideas for minor changes (layout and colour and effect tweaks type things mainly) by just editing the QML themselves. Which is great because they have little interest in (or, realistically, chance of) learning to recompile the app and would be nagging me for endless changes otherwise. So exposed QML has been good for development, but it remains to be seen if we'll just leave it like that if the app ever ships properly, or whether we'll make some efforts to hide the QML away more then.

Well good news: It appears GLES 3.1 will have some main stream support in Qt 5.6.

The goal is to combine/use existing C++ libraries (photo/image processing) from other projects as part of the business layer in combination with databases.

Since you're going to write lots of C++ code, go with Widgets. Integration will be much easier.

What's with performance, future Qt development etc.?

Widgets have great performance for desktop-style GUIs. Qt Quick's performance shines when you want to do very fancy things like particle animations.

As for the future, Qt Quick is receiving lots of attention, but it cannot fully replace Qt Widgets yet. Widgets will be around for many years to come.

Is the "Widget-way" still actual for desktop or slowly dying?

It's not dying. :) (you'll hear some people say that it's dying because it's not receiving as much attention compared to Qt Quick, but you need to remember that Qt Widgets is a very mature product, that's why it doesn't need as much attention)

I'd like to bump this topic, it's been over 5 years and you'd think small sprites would be better respected and not blurry with the qt engine (as ya know, sprites came from the pixel era) , I've tried everything under the sun to get sprites that aren't blurry and it seems you have to basically use an AnimatedImage or your own sprite engine to make do.

I would have modified the sprites item or made my own copy but I couldn't find a copy of its source

Sorry for putting this up again, but I faced the same issue when I tried to get 2 QQuickRenderControls render into a frame buffer of the same context. Context sharing was no option, since it isn't support on all platforms, plus I would have had to change a good bunch of code to get it actually working with shared contexts.

Before initializing your QQuickRenderControl, issue the following call:

my_context->setProperty("_q_sgrendercontext", QVariant());

If this property is not an invalid QVariant, the code will assert at the position the thread creator mentioned. I didn't understand the use of this magic property when looking through the sources yet, but it seems that this property isn't used elsewhere and kind of redundant.

Sometimes it seems like the Qt developers like to give us riddles like that lol :-D.

@sierdzio Well, if the content is not loaded, how would it know what objects are in there (and thus what children to add)?

If I change the currentPage property from the C++ code, the relevant window content is loaded, so the Repeater itself seems to work. But I still cannot access the elements of any page.

It can't be done purely in QML. You will need to use sockets on C++ side. Qt has C++ API's for sockets. QTcpServer creates a server and QTcpSocket for client. After that you will need to expose them to QML.
